The most coveted ruby is a Burma Ruby, with a color of pigeon blood. Burma rubies may also have a beautiful pink color. A ruby must have beautiful color, and life, and will have imperfections called silk that can be seen with a microscope or 10 power loupe. Siam Ruby

Siam rubies were also very popular during the 1960's and 1970's. A vintage siam ruby ring will have a purplish hue. It will also have imperfections called silk showing that it is a true ruby and not synthetic.


Most Burma or Siam Rubies will have some form of heat treatment. The most sought after ruby is one that has no heat treatment. Fun Fact: Synthetic rubies were used as accent gemstones during the Art Deco and Victorian eras.


The AGL and the GIA are two prominent laboratories located in NYC that will grade rubies, specifically for any type of treatment. They will also say which mines the are the rubies from.

Conflict free and Ethical

All new rubies mined today will have some form of heat treatment. No one can guarantee if they have, or have not, been used to finance any modern conflicts.
