      Defining Traits

The marquise cut originated in France when King Louis was looking for a unique gemstone shape to present to his beloved, Marie Antoinette. Here are some traits to look for in this cut:

      • Beautifully Tapered Shape. Marquise cut diamonds and precious gemstones have a distinctive ellipse shape that includes 58 facets. They are sometimes referred to as a “navette,” which means “little boat” in French.
      • Perfect Symmetry. In a perfectly cut marquise, the end points perfectly align with each other. Any error in this perfect symmetry will make a marquise cut stone far less desirable.
      • Pointed Edges. Because of their slender, pointed ends, marquise cut diamonds are susceptible to chipping. A well-designed ring setting should have special prongs at each end to keep these pointed tips safe from harm.
      • Bow-Tie. Just like with pear cut diamonds, the placement of facets in marquise cut diamonds can cause a dark, bow-tie shaped shadow to form in the center. Carefully examine your gemstone in a variety of lights to ensure no shadows hinder its sparkle.
