Why a Diamond May Not Be the Right Choice

There is no denying that diamonds are beautiful jewels, sparkling with the passionate fire of romance and commitment with a sense of eternal endurance. But diamonds aren’t always the best choice for an engagement ring. Some brides-to-be simply prefer a more unique gemstone, while a good quality diamond may be outside the budget for some couples. For a second (or more) marriage, a bride-to-be may not want a diamond, particularly if it could have less-than-romantic connections to a previous relationship.

Whatever the reason, there are many lovely choices for diamond alternatives ideal for an engagement ring, no matter what the individual style or preferences the ring will represent.

Top 10 Diamond Alternatives Perfect for Engagement Rings

For couples who still like the classic look of a colorless stone but prefer not to have a diamond, there are several other white gems that can be beautifully faceted to showcase similar sparkle and brilliance.

1. White Sapphire

White sapphire offers a clean, colorless look with a softer sparkle than diamond. As a corundum gemstone, it is highly durable and well suited to everyday wear, making it a practical choice for an engagement ring. Its understated brilliance works especially well in vintage and antique-inspired settings where the design of the mounting can take as much focus as the center stone.

2. Topaz

Topaz can be found in colorless varieties that offer a bright, clean look, along with shades ranging from pale blue to rich golden tones. Vintage topaz rings often feature these gemstones in distinctive gold settings, giving them both color and period character.

3. Zircon

Natural zircon can display impressive brilliance and fire, especially in colorless stones that have a diamond-like appearance. Vintage zircon rings showcase this naturally sparkling gemstone in one-of-a-kind antique and vintage settings.

4. Opal

Opal offers a completely different look from a diamond, with flashes of color that can shift between blue, green, pink, orange, and yellow as the stone moves. Its distinctive play of color gives each opal a one-of-a-kind appearance, making it a beautiful choice for someone who wants an engagement ring with more personality. Antique opal rings, particularly those from the Victorian era, often feature opals set in yellow or rose gold, sometimes accented with small diamonds. Because opal is softer and more delicate than many traditional engagement-ring gemstones, it does require extra care for everyday wear.

5. Moonstone

Moonstone has a soft, glowing appearance created by adularescence, an optical effect that gives the stone a floating blue or white light as it moves. Its dreamy look makes it a distinctive alternative to a traditional diamond, especially in romantic vintage-style settings. Moonstone is softer than sapphire or diamond, so it requires more care and is best suited to someone comfortable with gentler everyday wear.

6. Pearl

Pearls offer a soft, luminous look that feels romantic and distinctive in an engagement ring. Their natural luster gives them a very different appearance from faceted gemstones, with a smooth glow rather than traditional sparkle. Because pearls are much softer and more delicate than diamonds or sapphires, they require careful wear and are best suited to someone comfortable treating the ring more gently.

Do You Want a Bold Pop of Color?

For a bold pop of color, colored gemstones are increasingly popular for engagement rings. There are only four truly precious gemstones in the world, with diamond being the first, but the other three are equally stunning choices.

7. Ruby

Rubies offer a rich red color that makes them a beautiful and romantic alternative to diamonds in engagement rings. Known for symbolizing love, passion, and devotion, natural rubies have been treasured for centuries. Like sapphires, rubies are exceptionally durable and well suited for everyday wear. Vintage ruby engagement rings are especially appealing for their vibrant color and distinctive designs, often featuring rubies paired with old European cut or old mine cut diamonds in gold or platinum settings.

8. Sapphire

Sapphires offer a beautiful combination of rich color, durability, and vintage charm, making them an excellent alternative to diamonds in engagement rings. Although best known for their deep blue color, natural sapphires also come in shades of pink, yellow, green, and purple. Their exceptional hardness makes them well suited for everyday wear, while their rich colors pair beautifully with both gold and platinum settings. Art Deco sapphire engagement rings are especially appealing for their distinctive designs, often featuring sapphires accented by old European cut or old mine cut diamonds.

9. Emerald

Emeralds offer a rich green color that makes them a beautiful and distinctive alternative to diamonds in engagement rings. Long associated with love, renewal, and growth, natural emeralds have been treasured for centuries. Their vibrant color pairs beautifully with both gold and platinum settings, especially when accented by diamonds. Art Deco emerald engagement rings are particularly appealing for their intricate designs and vintage charm. Because emeralds are more delicate than diamonds or sapphires, they require extra care and are best suited to someone comfortable wearing their ring gently.

My own engagement ring, offered to me 30 years ago, was a pair of rubies in a double heart setting (what do you know, I was a trendsetter before gemstone engagement rings were a trend!). Many gorgeous celebrity engagement rings have featured these brilliantly colored precious jewels, including the ruby ring of Sarah Ferguson, Duchess of York, the sapphire ring of Kate Middleton, Princess of Wales, and the emerald ring of award-winning actress Halle Berry.

Of course, many other gemstones – while they may not have the official “precious” designation – can be glorious choices as diamond alternative for your engagement ring.

Birthstones, for example, can be very symbolic and meaningful choices, either to represent the birth month of the bride or groom, the month they met or first expressed their love for one another, the month of the proposal, or the month of the upcoming wedding. With a toi-et-moi design or other multi-gem ring, multiple birthstones could create a very colorful engagement ring layered with hidden meaning.

There are colored gems available in a rainbow of shades, and choosing a favorite color is another way to personalize an engagement ring. Love purple? Consider amethyst or the purple-blue of tanzanite. Do you prefer light blue? Aquamarine is a lovely watery shade. What about yellow? Citrine and topaz have many different shades of yellow. Love light green? The brilliance of peridot can be perfect.

Finally, one of the very best diamond engagement ring alternatives is the easiest and most widespread to find.

10. No Gem at All

There is no hard-and-fast rule when it comes to engagement rings, and it isn’t required that this very special ring has any gemstone at all. In fact, a plain ring – perhaps a claddagh or metal knot design, or just a simple band – can be a very practical choice for many couples, and can be a very economical one as well.

Ultimately, the choice of engagement ring design is a personal one. The couple will know what the ring means, what it promises, and how it will lead to their future together. Choosing a diamond alternative is a creative way to personalize the style and make it
even more meaningful as the happy years pass.
