What Is a Superstition?
A superstition is a belief or behavior generally considered irrational or based in the supernatural and unable to be scientifically explained. To an individual, however, this can be a very compelling belief, whether it involves luck (good or bad!), premonitions, or folklore. Following a superstition can provide comfort to an individual, and respecting and understanding superstitions can be helpful as a couple works to build a lifelong, committed relationship together.
Superstitions About Engagement and Wedding Rings
There are a wide variety of superstitions connected to such significant and meaningful pieces of jewelry as engagement rings and wedding rings. While the origins of these superstitions are long lost to the murky mists of history, they remain widespread among many cultures today.
1. Choosing a vintage ring or heirloom family piece passes along the joy and happiness.
What a great reason to opt for a gorgeous vintage engagement ring or vintage wedding ring! This continuity of history can be very appealing for couples with close family ties or who appreciate particular historical eras. Be cautious, however, because another variation of this superstition is that unhappy marriages could also be passed along with these rings.

2. Losing or damaging an engagement ring means bad luck for the marriage.
This type of superstition is common and can also apply to a wedding ring. While this superstition typically refers to unintentional loss or damage (make sure you’re careful!), some interpretations believe that even loving engravings might also be considered damage that could weaken a ring and bring bad luck to the couple.

3. Dropping the ring during the proposal means the relationship will fall apart.
It’s natural to be nervous when asking that most important question, but keep a firm grip on the ring to be sure it doesn’t fall or the relationship may fall apart as well! This superstition can also apply to the wedding ring when it is presented during the wedding ceremony, whether it falls from a ring pillow or might be fumbled by nervous fingers.

4. Using gold and silver together on the same ring creates an imbalance in the marriage.
At one time, the warmth of gold and the cool of silver were not considered fashionable if worn together, which may be the origin of this particular superstition. Just like any folklore or preference, however, it’s completely personal and two-tone rings can be a lovely blending of two distinct personalities into one gorgeous ring.

5. A loose ring means there is a disconnect or growing distance between the couple.
If a ring is too tight it can be problematic to wear, but even more troubling is the superstition that an overly tight engagement or wedding ring might mean jealousy, mistrust, or other trouble in the relationship, such as neediness, suspicion, or clinginess that takes away one’s independence. Instead, a well-fitted ring is the best option!

6. If another woman asks to try on the ring she wants to steal your man’s heart!
It is natural to want to show off one’s gorgeous new ring, but keep it on your finger without letting someone else try it on! Even subconsciously, superstition contends that if someone asks to try on the ring then they really want to be the one wearing it themselves and may be out to sabotage the relationship and steal your partner.

Should You Beware of Superstitions?
With so many superstitions surrounding engagement rings and wedding rings, it can seem a bit overwhelming to figure out how to best choose, wear, and enjoy these very special rings. The most important thing to remember, however, is that one’s beliefs are always personal and meaningful. If a superstition is important to you, by all means pay attention to it. If you don’t agree with the belief, that’s okay too, and just enjoy your rings and the love they represent in the way that means the most to you.
